My Philippines Trip

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. going to write up a blog of my upcoming trip to the Philippines. Went last year with my girlfriend to visit mum and the rest of my family and I'm going back again in a week with a mate or two.

Plans are to stay a week with family in a little province town of San Jaoquin on Panay Island for the town fiesta. Will get to watch some bull fighting, horse fighting and the rooster derby. Watch the beauty pageant and talent shows. Get absolutely wrecked on 70cent beers and $1.50 bottles of rum. 2nd week we'll head off to the little paradise island of Boracay (one of the best beaches in the world) to do the usual partying, jetski, scooters and go cliff diving. Last 4 days will be spent in the capital Manila. Do the drinking rounds (some bars do $8 all you can drink for 4 hours), cruise around the f**king massive malls and markets, shoot some machine guns at the range and maybe get another tattoo.

although its not the regular tourist destination its going to be fun to get around on my own and to get out of the comfort zone.

I might include some things that i did last year for those that might be interested.

I'm still yet to go home and visit borocay. I'm actually supposed to go with parents next week. Fam friends(Ninang for those playing at home) is getting married but they are going for 5 weeks. Can't get it off work so not going.

In saying that, I'm going Europe end of year and last leg of the trip is the Phils.

i'd never heard of boracay until last year when i was planning the first trip. i guess if i ever go back again in a few years i might try somewhere new like cebu, palawan or bohol. at the end of the year when u go, the weather will be awesome and in the swing of high season. Have u ever been back to the phils before?

Yeah I have 4 times. Never went to cebu or borocay tho. It's like a calmer version of Thailand.

When I go I just visit family in makati which is a Manila suburb and malolos. Go shopping in the massive shipping centers and cheap food. In saying that it's always been with family so I'm

Overdue to go back and run a muck

Are you going for leisure/party or shopping?

arrived back home yesterday. sucks to be back but didnt have enough money to keep going.

I'll just start writing up bits and pieces everyday since i didnt get onto a computer for the first week.

Left home on tuesday 17 and flew with cathay pacific which meant a stop over in hong kong. our flight from brisbane was late so we had to run to get the connecting flight. Hong kong airport is so stupid, to get from the arrivals back around to departures we had to change levels 4 times and catch a bloody subway train. Got there in time for the short trip to Manila. Arrived in Manila at midnight then got on the shuttle bus to get around to the domestic airport. Munched down on Jollybee and then waited till 5am for the domestic flight.

Arrived in Iloilo at 6am, got picked up by my cousins for the 1hour drive back to the province of San Jaoquin. Was pretty tired, only had about 2hrs sleep on the plane but once we got to the house we started smashing down some red horse beers.

finaly caught up on my sleep by thursday. mainly just chilling out at the beach and walking around the town markets. My cousin owns a sari sari store but he was away while we were there so had to buy alcohol from a family friend up the street.

DSC03095.JPG

san miguel's 50cents each from the sari sari. we got the neighbour who owned a tricycle to go up the street for us. $12.50 a case including his delivery fee, nothing beats the heat better. He would even take the empties back for us when we needed more.

That arvo we took a tricycle to Santa Rita to see my relatives and go cruising around on their fishing boat. over 10min drive to get there and only cost us 50cents each. For those that havent been to the philippines, the tricyle is a motorbike with a sidecart that can fit 6people. if u want to pack them on 1 can stand on the wheel arch, another sit on the roof and 2 get behind the rider.

DSC03159.JPG

we had 6 on ours but the driver stopped at the bottom of a hill to let someone off and then couldnt take off. 2 of us jumped out then ran up the hill behind untill he got out of 1st gear then jumped back on lol.

DSC02936.JPG

cruised around in the boat for a while. Lots of little bamboo houses in this village

view from the bedroom i slept in San Jaoquin. On this stretch of beach i think we're the only ones that live on the beachfront with a proper house. all the rest are just bamboo.

DSC02940.JPG

Friday morning we went to the dentist to get a check, clean and polish. only 500peso ($11.35)

After lunch we checked out the rooster derby. there was so many people packed into the little arena and guys were throwing money everywhere making outside bets with eachother. One guy starts yelling out his odds and then other guys yell back and give him hand signals for the amount. Its crazy to see this and all the guys remember who placed bets with them even if theyre on the other side of the ring.Lost a few bets myself

That afternoon had a big bbq at my cousins on his roof where its all been tiled and turned into a party area with its own kitchen, karaoke setup, toilets and bamboo hut with a few beds. Nothing better than home cooked chicken inasal, grilled tuna steaks and sashimi. Cranked the karaoke, watched some pacquiao fights and let off fireworks.

yeh its starting to pick up but its a long way off being like thailand which is good. At least in the tourist spots, most of them are still filipino's and especially in Manila, apart from my mate I only came across maybe 10 other white ppl in 4 days.

Last year on the Fri night of the fiesta we went to the town plaza to watch the talent show then after they have a 'disco' as they call it. Good opportunity to meet some single filo girls hehe

Sat 21 Jan

Day of Pasungay! The week of this yearly fiesta builds up to the bull fights which is the main event of the week.None of the animals fight to the death. they just keep going until 1 gets tired or scared and runs away. The last bull fight was a cracker. they fought for ages then when 1 ran away the other chased it around the field for 5min running through the crowd. eventually the scared 1 smashed through the fence and ran down the street and the other kept on chasing hahaha.

DSC03005.JPG

also do some horse fights. 2 males fight over the female thats being led around.

DSC03000.JPG

They dont f**k around when it comes to event security

Most arvos all the local schools parade through the town for the percussion and marching band competition. pretty good percussion out of those guys and most of the drums they have are just made from old oil barrells of different sizes.

On the sunday 22 jan we went into the city to go to the mall and see some of the Dinagyang performances. Caught the Jeepney back to the province all squished up with heaps of ppl which took 2 hours. man my back and knees were sore after that trip.worth it for the price though, only cost $2each. Luckily we left the mall when we did as we found out when we got home that 30min after we left there was a big fire at the mall. Must have been the DJ comp they were having that caused the fire. there was around 8-10 walls of speakers just smashing out the tunes and all the power chords were just thrown everywhere.

Trusty old jeepney

nah i dont eat that. at home i normally eat most of the usual filo main meals but when i go over there i really get into the desserts coz i never have time to learn how to make them apart from cassava cake. love smashing halo halo, buko pie, those rice flour muffins, bande, leche flan.

one thing im devo'd about not eating was taho. everytime is saw the guy walking around selling it i was eating something or drinking a beer.

i always pack on the weight when i get to manila as i normaly stay in a hotel there. Jollibee FTW! They also seem to really love their pizza with Shakey's, Greenwhich and Yellow Cab stores everywhere.

Took the bus from San Joaquin to Caticlan which is the port to get the ferry across to boracay. Hektic mountain roads on the way and some parts of the road werent sealed so there were some big rutts in the ground. got airborne out of our seats at the back which was pretty funny. Took 6 hours to get there but only cost us $5 each.

We were at Boat station 1 on white beach which is where a lot of the water activiy companies are based so we didnt have to walk far to meet the operators.

Last year Boracay was rated number 2 beach in the world The sand is so white and fine like powder and u only have to walk out knee deep to see little fish swimming around and the water is really clear.

We were there for chinese new year week and was told it was going to be pretty busy but theres about half the people that u would find in phuket. was good not to be so crammed and more relaxing but theres still a good night life with a couple big clubs.

DSC03149.JPG

DSC03147.JPG

smashing down gold eagle beers was the activity of choice lol. these 1L suckers are only $1. San Miguels were still 50cents from a sari sari but 1 problem with a sari store is that u have to bring back the empty bottles. u can pay 65cents from the quickey mart so u dont have to bring them back.

DSC03094.JPG

our room was above the pizza shop and i swear chinese people have never had it before. sitting on the balcony watching the groups of chinese ppl stop in amazement at the pizza's was a little funny.

our little room above the pizza shop. probably paid too much for the room but the location was good. I was told by some canadian girls that about 500m further down the beach they were staying in little hut type rooms for half the price of what i was paying.

At night there was a band that played in front of our hotel and fire twirlers every night.

DSC03090.JPG

DSC03097.JPG

went jetskiing on these new 1000cc seadoos. pretty ballsy which made it fun as there was a section that was pretty choppy and riding in someones wake meant getting smashed in the face with water lol. get them out of the water and start smashing the limiter hahah.

went out to a few bars and met some cool ppl. barely any aussies over there which was a good change. dont want to hang around the 'bintang bogans' that are in bali. A lot of the white people we met there actually worked in either korea or hong kong and holiday in the philippines regularly as its so cheap for airfairs and only 2 hours per flight.

Day 3 in Boracay we went out to Ariels Point. 30min boat back to Panay island for some crazy cliff diving!

This place was awesome although expensive but u have to do it. $30 for half day with all you can eat and drink. you can also go snorkelling and canoeing. Theres a 5m, 7m, 8m and the monster 15m platform to jump off. I get really sea sick but as soon as i hit land i was ready to smash the 15m. i just ran off the platform without looking at how high it really was. f**king freaked me out during the freefall as i had some time to take it all in.

There was a heap of guys that pussed out and didnt even jump off the 5m when there was a few 12yr olds doing 360's off the 5m. My mate was doing backflips from the 7m which i got on film. some americans came over to him and said "omg ur so good, are u a professional diver?" one girl tried to dive headfirst from the 5m and axed herself with a big belly flop hahaha.

they've got a pet monkey that drinks beer lol

Went to the fish market in D'Tallipapa. advertised prices arent good but u can smash them down without trying too hard. We wanted to buy some of those jumbo prawn f**kers. advertised price was 1800php ($40) per kg but i just raised my eyebrows and he said "ok sir, philippino price for you" knocked it down to 800php straight up. We gave him 1000php ($22) and he gave us 1.3kg.

so much good seafood there for cheap. crabs, lobster and massive tuna.

Theres a heap of restuarants that surround the markets and they will cook the seafood u bring in. we paid $2.50 to get them cooked in garlic butter and some rice.

Night out == Republic.

My advise is you guys should book a table so you don't have to line up.

When I went, we got the 17,000peso big table ($425) divided 5 way.

And pretty much the money you pay is the amount of alcohol that goes with it.... you even have a waiter pouring the drinks for you.

It's about 4 bottles of spirirts and 2 jugs of cocktails and 1 bottle of petron, if I remember correctly.....

Greenbelt is awesome for shopping and wine and dine.... same goes for MOA. Branded shit cost waaay less.

If you want cheap stuff, go Greenhills... where all the fake shit are. lol.

Boracay,.. best ever new year for me.

Stayed 6 days, drunk at night, and chill on the beach by day.... hired myself a dirtbike so I can go around the island... very difficult when you're hungover.

republic is at Resort World right? was at the casino there and saw it but yeh my mate wasnt dressed right to suit the high prices. I heard tabu is a good place. tues night they have models night but booking is essential. Treid going to this superclub called the embassy in eastwood but found out it got shut down after way too many all-in brawls. We ended up just going around Malate checking all the bars there, lots of bands and cheap drinks. 3L cocktail towers for $15 f**king smash u.

Didnt want to buy any shit while in manila so didnt go to greenhills or divisoria. went to moa and my mate got a tattoo, i bought some stuff from the pacquiao stores at moa and robinsons malate.

we went to get scooters on boracay but it was a f**king rip. i dont know if it was just the 3 places we looked at or they're all about $40 for 8hours. thats 1 thing i found real exy for the phils. thailand is $8 for 24hours.

Went to the Manila Shooting Range which is on Magapacal Ave thats about 2min from Mall of Asia. Got to shoot .40, .44 and M-16. Was my first time shooting and i was squeezing the pistol and pulling the shots to the right. M16 was awesome to shoot, just kept it on semi auto so we didnt just waste all our money in a few seconds. Being a left hander the shell discharge would fly right in front of my eyes. very little recoil in comparison to the .44 but f**king hell it was so loud if you stood next to the guy shooting. its not as loud and u dont feel as much shock when ur the shooter but its crazy when ur just watching.
