Ultrabooks - What's good in 2014?

Recommended Posts

There was a similar thread about a year ago (http://hardtuned.net...howtopic=529762), but i'm curious to know what's good now.

I'm in the market for one to use for work/home, but i'm looking at whatever is available.

Minimum requirements would be:

  • Anything that's not Apple.
  • 13" screen
  • Good connectivity (WIFI/ethernet, USB3.0, HDMI, Card reader? etc)
  • A dock option (Whether it's just one of those USB connection ones, or a click in type)
  • Ability to connect to a 2nd monitor easily
  • i5 processor (min). Quicker the boot up the better.
  • 4GB RAM (min)
  • THIN and LIGHT
  • High Resolution Touch Screen (I've gotten used to tablets)
  • Don't really care about gaming, so graphics would just be a bonus
  • Main use: Office programs, internet, presentations
  • Good build quality
  • Price: Preferably around $1500, but could go up to $2500

Yeah, there was a phase a few years ago as i saw them everywhere, especially with Dell's.

I have just been looking at the Lenovo X1 though. Any thoughts on this?

I hate thinkpads because they havent changed aesthetically for like 25 years.

the dock itself would probably work with any laptop, as long as you get drivers to install.

Sony Viao while you still can. The greatest laptop ever made.

And the Toshiba Docks are cheaper than the lenovo ones, all essentially the same internally.. Just remember through a usb dock your video is going through a usb3 video card, so dont expect great performance..

Do Sony have similar docks?

Not too fussed about video quality as it would only be for documents. However, i would like hi-res for marketing materials and floor plans.

Been playing with a X1 Carbon at work. Super thin, impressively light and feels awesome. Full CF body too

Only downside is the plain black look, but not a deal breaker

The plain black look suits me

Definitely jealous. Can't seem to get my hands on one and there's no way i'm paying retail lol
